Protestant Prayers — Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone
The Protestant tradition emphasizes direct access to God through Jesus Christ, the authority of Scripture, and salvation by grace through faith. These prayers reflect the heart of Reformed Christianity.
The Protestant Approach to Prayer
Protestant Christians believe that every believer has direct access to God through Jesus Christ, our only mediator (1 Timothy 2:5). We come to God not through our own merit, but through the finished work of Christ on the cross. Prayer is a privilege made possible by grace.
The Reformation recovered the truth that Scripture is our ultimate authority for faith and practice. These prayers are rooted in biblical promises and modeled after the prayers we find in God's Word. When we pray Scripture, we pray with confidence that we are praying according to God's will.
Prayer of Salvation
Lord Jesus, I confess that I am a sinner in need of Your saving grace. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose again on the third day. I cannot save myself — salvation is Your gift alone. I turn from my sin and place my trust entirely in You. Come into my heart, Lord Jesus. Be my Savior and my Lord. Thank You for Your amazing grace that saves a wretch like me. I receive Your gift of eternal life today. In Your precious name I pray, Amen.
Ephesians 2:8-9 — "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast."
Prayer for Daily Grace
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the gift of a new day and for the grace that meets me fresh each morning. Apart from You, I can do nothing. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit today. Guide my thoughts, my words, and my actions. Help me to walk in a manner worthy of my calling, showing love, patience, and kindness to everyone I meet. When I fall short, remind me that Your grace is sufficient and Your power is made perfect in my weakness. All glory belongs to You alone. In Jesus' name, Amen.
2 Corinthians 12:9 — "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'"
Prayer for Faith
Lord, I believe — help my unbelief! Strengthen my faith today. When doubts arise, anchor me in Your Word. When trials come, help me to trust Your sovereign plan. You are the author and perfecter of my faith. Increase my confidence in Your promises, for not one of them has ever failed. Give me the faith of Abraham, who believed against hope. Give me the faith of the early church, who turned the world upside down. May my faith be genuine, refined by fire, and result in praise to Your glorious name. Amen.
Hebrews 11:1 — "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."
Prayer of Confession
Holy God, I come before You with a humble heart, acknowledging my sin. I have failed to love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. I have failed to love my neighbor as myself. I have sinned in thought, word, and deed. But Your Word promises that if I confess my sins, You are faithful and just to forgive me and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. I claim that promise now. Thank You that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Wash me clean and restore the joy of my salvation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
1 John 1:9 — "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
Prayer for Wisdom from Scripture
Father, Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law. Give me wisdom as I read the Scriptures — not human wisdom, but the wisdom that comes from above. By Your Holy Spirit, illuminate the truth and apply it to my life. May Your Word dwell in me richly. Transform my mind so that I may discern Your good, pleasing, and perfect will. All Scripture is breathed out by You and profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. Make me complete and equipped for every good work. Amen.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 — "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
The Lord's Prayer (Protestant Version)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Matthew 6:9-13
